There are also many important historical sites on the west side of the River Nile called the Theban Necropolis, including the Valley of the Kings and Queens. Many tourists come to Luxor each year, which helps the city's economy. Luxor has a population of about 422,407 people and covers about 417 square kilometers. It is also the capital of Luxor Governorate and is known for being one of the oldest cities in the world that people still live in.

History

Luxor was the ancient city of Thebes, the capital of Upper Egypt during the New Kingdom and the city of Amun, later becoming the god Amun-Ra. The city was known as wAs.t, meaning "city of the sceptre", later as ta jpt, meaning "the shrine/temple", and sometimes as the "city of the 100 gates". The importance of the city started with the 11th Dynasty and Montuhotep II. The Pharaohs of the New Kingdom saw the city accumulate great wealth and rise to world prominence. As the city of the god Amun-Ra, Thebes remained the religious capital of Egypt until the Greek period. The city was destroyed by the Assyrian emperor Ashurbanipal, and its importance declined. Following Muslim conquest, Luxor Temple was converted from a church to a mosque and remains so today. In the 18th century, Luxor became a popular destination for European travelers and is now a major tourist destination.
