The experience

Abu Dabbab is a wide, shallow bay south of Marsa Alam whose seabed is covered in seagrass rather than coral. That meadow is why the bay matters: it feeds green turtles and, occasionally, dugongs — the shy marine mammals the bay is known for.

You snorkel from the beach rather than a boat, which suits anyone who prefers a gentle entry. The shallows are calm and the seagrass beds sit within easy reach, with guides pointing out where turtles are feeding.

This is a long road day from Hurghada, several hours each way. Dugongs are wild and rarely seen; turtles are far more reliable. A national park fee is collected at the bay in cash and is not part of the online price.
