The experience

Aswan is where the Nile narrows between granite outcrops, and its sites are as much about that geology as about history: the unfinished obelisk still lying in the quarry where it cracked, and the High Dam that reshaped the river in the 1960s.

Philae is the centrepiece. The temple of Isis was cut apart and rebuilt on Agilkia Island when the dam raised the water, and you reach it by boat. Your guide covers the move as well as the temple — the two belong together.

A long road day with an early start. Entrance fees are collected locally and are not part of the online price.
