The experience

El Quseir is about eighty kilometres up the coast from Marsa Alam, and the drive is part of the appeal: open coastline with very little on it, then a town that predates the whole resort strip.

In town you visit the Ottoman fortress built above the seafront, walk the old streets where houses are cut from coral blocks, and finish at the harbour. Your guide covers the pilgrimage and trade history that put a fortress here in the first place.
