The experience

Aswan sits where the Nile narrows between granite outcrops, and its sites are about that geology as much as its history: the unfinished obelisk still lying in the quarry it cracked in, and the High Dam that reshaped the river in the 1960s.

Philae is the centrepiece. The temple of Isis was cut into pieces and moved stone by stone to Agilkia Island when the dam raised the water, and you reach it by boat. Your guide covers the relocation as well as the temple itself — the two stories belong together.

This is a very long road day from the Red Sea coast with an early start. Entrance fees to the sites are collected locally and are not part of the online price.
