The experience

El Quseir was a Red Sea port long before the resorts existed: a pilgrimage crossing to Arabia and a trade harbour, and the town still reads that way. The Ottoman fortress above the seafront was built to guard it.

You walk the old town where houses are built from coral blocks cut out of the reef, past the old post and customs buildings, and down to the harbour where small boats still work. Your guide fills in the trade history that explains why a town this size has a fortress at all.
